Design of a five-axis ultra-precision micro-milling machine—UltraMill. Part 1: holistic design approach, design considerations and specifications
This output was disseminated as a result of an EU FP6 Integrated Project (MASMICRO, Grant No. IP 500095-2), with a focus on the development of an 5-axis ultraprecision micro-milling machine as an enabling facility for supporting European manufacturing SMEs to engage in high-value manufacturing. In part 1 of this two-part paper, the design and analysis of the 5-axis ultra-precision micro-milling machine – UltraMill – are discussed, particularly on its novel design configuration and key technological innovations. UltraMill can render the surface roughness (5-10nm) by micro-milling on non-ferrous metals, which is the finest micro-milled surface reported.
