This is a single-authored book which arose out of the collection and analysis of a considerable body of theoretical and empirical material. The book also draws on data which was collected over a lengthy period of time: 1998 – 2007. The final output is therefore the result of a complex process of articulation between theoretical and empirical insights. The fieldwork which informs this book took the form of interviews and participant observation undertaken continuously between 1999 and 2001, followed by a return to the field in 2007.
