Additional information

This paper describes a pioneering investigation on the response of human osteoblast cells to patterned surfaces of electrosprayed nanoapatite; it highlights the importance of combining surface topography and chemistry in next generation medical implants to guide cellular behaviour. The research is extended through follow on collaboration with Cambridge University and Addenbrooke’s hospital, and led to a grant awarded by Orthopaedic Research UK for exploring smart implants for next generation medical devices (Ref: 461, http://www.oruk.org/funding-research/research-projects/). The results were also presented in an invited talk at the 7th International Conference on Materials Science and Technology (Thailand, 2012).
