Additional information

Railway operators have increasing uncertainty over fuel prices, and an increasing responsibility to improve the efficiency of existing rolling stock. A train may consist of multiple drive units and carriages; the work presented in this paper examines the hypothesis that fuel savings may be made through the optimal de-synchronisation of the operation of the multiple drive units. In this novel application, complex optimisation techniques are simplified so as to allow practical control inputs for a real system. The work has significant worldwide application in many types of railway propulsion systems.
