Italian. Often identified as a populist maker of escapist fantasies for the Studio System this counter-reading casts Capra’s films in a new light, pointing out their profound pessimism: from social catastrophe (American Madness, 1932) to immigration (The Younger Generation, 1929), from suicide (The Way of the Strong, 1928) to social and family issues (Platinum Blonde, 1931; It Happened One Night, 1934). The adjective “capraesque” takes on a new meaning providing a worldview rooted in poverty, class struggle and the contradictions that are inherently part of the American values, myths, and ideals during the Great Depression.
