Theory (see Saikaly and Oerther, Microb. Ecol., 2004, 48(2): 274-284) and intuition suggest that sludge age should affect diversity in activated sludge reactors. This paper showed that this could not be demonstrated in practice, but that time was very important, an insight that formed a key element in our rationale for undertaking deeper sequencing in Frontier Engineering Award “Simulation of open engineered biological systems” (EP/K039083/1, £5.6M; lead academic Curtis).
