Luigi Dallapiccola and Musical Modernism in Fascist Italy
Two of five chapters were submitted as articles for RAE 2008. For the purposes of REF 2014, only pages 1–142 and 194–234 are eligible for submission. This nevertheless amounts to a considerable body of text (about 60, 000 words). It develops a complex theoretical understanding of musical modernism and applies it to a large and varied range of materials. Two chapters include surveys of Italian modernist composition in the 1910s and 1920s. Both are over 20,000 words; their preparation involved the investigation of extensive primary and secondary sources. A further chapter (also to be submitted) combines music-analytical and archival findings.
