This article was invited by the journal to add further details to research first published in Nature Physics 4, 399-403 (2008). The research allowed direct imaging of bulk magnetic effects to be offered as a “standard” technique for the first time. Similar facilities have been (or are still being) developed at other research institutes including the Paul-Scherrer Institute (Switzerland), Forschungs-Neutronenquelle Heinz Maier (Germany) and ISIS (UK).
