Additional information

This work introduced a discretisation scheme for unstructured mesh ocean modelling, providing stable representation of both gravity waves and slow balanced dynamics, crucial for large scale modelling. This scheme is used in the Imperial College Ocean Model (external users included British Antarctic Survey (p.holland@bas.ac.uk)), allowing the first unstructured mesh basin-scale simulations that make predicting large scale ocean circulation possible, and led to a successful NERC proposal (NE/I02013X/1, £165k FEC). Comblen et al (2010, Int J. Num. Meth. Fluids) showed it outperforms many other schemes; it has also been adopted by the Hamburg Max Planck Institute (Dueben et al (2011, JCP)).
