Steven King is the Director of the Centre for Medical Humanities and editor (with Andreas Gestrich and Elizabeth Hurren) of Poverty and Sickness in Modern Europe: Narratives of the Sick Poor (Continuum, 2012). He wrote 80% of the Introductory chapter (pages 1-34) and 75% of the Appendix (pages 247-66) in addition to the chapter submitted here. His co-author for the chapter (Stringer) was RA on the underlying Wellcome Trust funded project on sickness and poverty and King wrote 80% of the chapter.
