A systems engineering approach to validation of a pulmonary physiology simulator for clinical applications
This article describes a systems engineering framework for the validation of an in silico simulation model of pulmonary physiology, which can be employed for parameter settings optimization to minimize potential risks of the patients’ lungs from mechanical ventilation and maximize oxygenation efficiency leading to clinical advices. The work is one outcome of the EPSRC projects (EP/F057016/1, £200k; EP/F057016/2, £100k) in collaboration with Queens Medical Centre at Nottingham. This work has led to further grants (EPSRC: EP/1036680/1, £451k; MRC: G1002017, £172k) and an invited talk at TED Exeter (Technology, Entertainment, Design) in April 2013.
