Additional information

Future large wind turbines need modular designs, medium-voltage capability and fault ride-through characteristics. Paper proposes new high-power medium-voltage converter topology to transfer power of 5 MW or more in such wind turbines. System current level is effectively reduced by using medium-voltage technology. Cable and switchgear loss and cost are also reduced. 3 kW prototype is built to validate proposed topology and control strategy. Work won prize for excellence from Delta Electronics Foundation and is currently being commercialised in China by Harvest Ltd. [contact: Prof. Cha, Tsinghue University, China].
