English abstract

Zoos are inhabited by thousands of individual animals from scores of different species. In everyday speech and in the literature about zoos such animals are given a common identity when they are referred to, and classified as, ‘wild’ animals. I suggest that the classifying and categorisation of animals in zoo as ‘wild’ animals is problematic. Clearly the animal in the zoo is related to the wild animal and I am interested in how it might be represented as a wild animal and how it represents a wild animal.
