Coating techniques and materials have been the focus of study for a varied range of applications. The substrate treatment highly affects the improvement of the coating behaviour and successful application. The characterisation of the substrate through diffraction, which is the side of the projects that I was leading, has shown a valuable prospective for the understanding of the improvements and their reproducibility. The methodological approach is now in place for the investigation of other metals in a wider collaboration within Brunel.
