Additional information

This paper was the result of collaboration between Cambridge University and BIB. It involved purifying the active components from a natural plant product. With natural products, there is often a synergistic effect whereby the activity results from the interaction of several components. When the mixture is purified to single entities, the activity is lost. With the novel approach adopted in this publication, a liquid-liquid solvent system was developed with a partition coefficient of unity for the bioactivity (whatever that consisted of) and then that activity was collected when the system was run through a counter-current centrifuge.
