This paper won an international prize: 2010 Karl Emil Hilgard Hydraulic Award of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

The paper concerns a joint, EPSRC-funded, collaboration between Dundee and Manchester Universities. Our contribution was to undertake and write up the numerical modelling simulations to compare directly with the laboratory experiments in Dundee. The paper identified key parameters in determining how and where particulate would drop out of buoyant plumes and whether it would accumulate near the source.
