Effects of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin exposure on bone material properties
Dioxins are toxic environmental contaminants that accumulate in the food chain, leading to acute bone problems especially in countries bordering the Baltic Sea. This research was part of an EU funded project (BONETOX, QLK4-CT-2002-02528, 2.8M Euro, http://www.imm.ki.se/bonetox/) that investigated dioxin effects on the biomechanical properties of bone tissue. Contact Helen Håkansson, coordinator, helen.hakansson@imm.ki.se The work underpinned the creation of the Cranfield Forensic Institute Analytical Laboratory in Shrivenham, an investment of £1M. The techniques are used in legal case work for the benefit of regulatory bodies to tackle crime, terrorism, security threats and environmental pollution problems (http://www.cranfield.ac.uk/cds/cfi/analytical.html).
