Dissimilar laser welding of NiTi to stainless steel
This paper reports a new technique to laser weld structural materials with different stiffness and elasticity, with importance to in-vivo medical devices such as stents (jim.fife@ATTICA.com). The concepts have led to further research lasers joining of a wide range of dissimilar materials. This includes EPSRC funding (EP/J017086, £100k), projects co-funded by AWE (Jay.Vaja@awe.co.uk) and BAE Systems (norrie.mcpherson@baesystems.com) and an EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacture in Laser Based Production Processes with Heriot Watt University (£5.6M, EP/K030884, contact d.p.hand@hwu.ac.uk ). The concepts are also being adopted for application to medical devices (Attica Components, contact jim.fife@attica.com).
