Additional information

Reports how a research technology, originally investigated for optics fabrication, was revised to assist fabrication of ultra-smooth bearing components. Surface roughness improvements from a typical 20 nm down to 1-4 nm were obtained, proving operational applicability of this electro-chemo-mechanical process for fabrication of advanced bearing performance. The work was funded by UK bearing manufacturer; NMB - Minebea. Subsequent development and production demonstrated that reduced roughness led directly to improved lifetime of bearings produced. Steve Essam Head of Production, NMB - Minebea, steve.essam@nmb-minebea.com.
