Additional information

The lifetime of a thermal barrier coating (TBC) is determined by microstructural evolution during service. This paper discusses the mapping of local strain fields as a function of the thermal cycling lifetime. This has allowed the role of surface finish and microstructure in minimising stress/strain fields to be investigated, thus improving component lifetime. As a result of this work, a new project was supported, funded by EPSRC (EP/G035369/1) and Rolls Royce to investigate the manufacture of new bondcoat systems for TBCs (contact: david.rickerby@rolls-royce.com).
