Additional information

Much previous work on thermal barrier coatings (TBC) focuses on thermal performance alone; the significance of this work is identification of the conflict between optimising thermal performance and the impact on erosion resistance, in a thermal barrier coating system for gas turbines. In follow-on work, erosion is assessed along with cyclic oxidation, thermal properties and microstructural degradation, under a new TSB/EPSRC contract aimed at improved TBC performance [EP/G035369/1;TSB ref TS/G002541/1 with Rolls-Royce plc, £1.066M], .
