This paper received The Felix Weinberg Prize, Institute of Physics, 2011 for its novel contributions to the numerical implementation of chemical reactions in complex multiphase flows. The results have been adopted to develop carbon capture methods in a follow-on EPSRC project: Computational Modelling and Optimisation of Carbon Capture Reactors (EP/J020184) in collaboration with E.ON.
