Additional information

This is the first paper to accurately determine the energy input from linear friction weld machine data, enabling the minimisation of energy input and environmental impact of the process. The work led to a follow-on project at Cranfield, jointly sponsored by The Welding Institute, Boeing and the EPSRC, which has extended the work to titanium alloys, using numerical modelling to optimise the process and identify the conditions for defect free welds. Contact: Dr. Mike Russell of TWI (mike.russell@twi.co.uk) and David Bolser (david.r.bolser@boeing.com).
