Fracture toughness and compressive properties of cancellous bone at the head of the femur and relationships to non-invasive skeletal assessment measurements
Significance of output:
Osteoporosis is a skeletal condition which affects millions of people worldwide with huge healthcare costs. Early diagnosis of low bone density and poor bone quality enables preventative measures to be put in place to prevent the debilitating low trauma fractures which characterises this condition. Quantitative ultrasound represents a cheap and quick bone quality investigation, with the added advantage of being portable. This study demonstrated ultrasound assessments of the calcaneus linked directly to the fracture toughness of the bone tissue from the same individual’s proximal femur. The study demonstrated that quantitative ultrasound can be used as a screening tool for osteoporosis
