Revisiting Marey's Applications of Scientific Moving Image Technologies in the Context of Bergson's Philosophy: Audio-Visual Mediation and the Experience of Time

This article is intended to extend the reach of the author’s research to a primarily scientific community in order to enlist collaboration on her topic between the sciences, arts and humanities. The research extends the author’s consideration of agency in the users’ engagement with audio-visual media technologies and situates this discussion in the contemporary context of medical imaging technologies discourse, in particular in relation to the work of art-historian Barbara Maria Stafford. Its particular significance lies in the introduction of issues discussed in the field of media studies to visual evidence in the field of medical humanities. It opens a particular threshold for an emerging area to address the therapeutic uses of audio-visual media. It is published in the journal Medical Studies, (a journal for history, philosophy, and ethics of medicine and allied sciences), edited by N.W. Paul, in the special issue “Medical Imaging: Philosophy and History”, guest-edited by Prof. Fangerau from Ulm University, which published the proceedings from the “1st International Conference on Medical Imaging and Philosophy: Challenges, Reflections and Actions”, May 2010, organised by the Institute of the History, Philosophy and Ethics of Medicine at Ulm University.
