Living drugs
This output derives from a funded collaboration between Roberts, Fraser and Valentine entitled ‘Substitution, Enhancement, Autonomy.’ Comparing data from two existing projects, we studied medications that are intended to function as enhancements or substitutions, focussing on the enactments of (non)rationality and autonomy in clinical encounters involving their prescription. Our collaboration resulted in an international workshop and a special issue of Science as Culture entitled ‘Living Drugs’ (Roberts, Valentine and Fraser, 2009). As described in our co-authored Introduction, the Issue advances debate around medicalization in STS, Sociology and Social Policy by bringing research on recreational, illicit and pharmaceutical drugs into explicit dialogue.
