Additional information

Tuned Mass Dampers (TMD) are vibration mitigation devices. The PI used it to reduce lamppost vibration by 100 times, and to prolong the service life of the lanterns. This pioneering paper pioneers the optimisation of TMD for reducing seismic risk using swarm algorithms. The particle swarm optimization as a novel evolutionary algorithm is applied for the first time to nonstationary, nonlinear random vibration. This paper has attracted 17 SCI citations from many countries including Iran, Turkey, Italy, China, Japan, Canada, and Korea. Based on the paper the PI was awarded a HK$1 million grant in 2013 from the Construction Industry Council to work on a Gyroscopic stabilizer for construction cranes and gondolas.
