The paper represents a first attempt at measuring a retrieved knee replacement component using a CMM. The techniques developed here have been pivotal to the development of later work on wear measurement of orthopaedic joint replacements specifically retrieved hip replacements. This in turn has led to major collaborative projects with the London Implant Retrieval Centre and DePuy Orthopaedics.
