<23> This paper improves on the group’s work on finding shadows in images [Finlayson et al. “On the Removal of Shadows from Images,” IEEE PAMI 2006] a necessary component of which was an extensive calibration of the camera system. In the new work we develop tools to bootstrap the calibration using the statistics from images themselves. The research was exploited by Imsense Ltd, which was granted the US Patent (Num. 7,751,639). Imsense Ltd, a company specialising image enhancement, was acquired by an industry major in 2010.
