Additional information

The scheme is the first social Housing (shared equity) in the UK to be officially accredited by the German ‘Passivhaus’ Institute. The calculations that based on PHPP, shown the overall energy consumption as 36.4 kWh/(m2a), which included the space heating, domestic hot water, household and auxiliary power. The heating demand is only 15 kWh/(m2a), a total of 1,750 kWh/a for the whole building.

It proves that sustainable and energy efficient design (‘passivhaus’ standards) is possible on a social housing budget. Affordability is inconsistent with sustainability and it was not achieved at the expense of architectural design or construction quality.

This output contributed significantly to the advancement of knowledge in the area of very low-energy affordable housing. Passive Housing Standards has had an influence on government policy at the national level.

The design output has been sited as the best- practice case studies and have become benchmark for low-energy sustainable designs. It provided case studies and research material and funding opportunities for the academic community.
