Additional information

This paper reports the first exploitation of "atomic clock transitions" for electron spins in the solid state (these are transitions which are first-order insensitive to magnetic field noise). This enabled us to obtain a coherence time of 3 seconds, the longest measured for an electron spin in any material. This work forms part of a worldwide renewed interest in bismuth donors in silicon (as opposed to the more studied phosphorus), of which my group has been a major instigator and contributor. These results form the basis for a new collaboration with CEA Saclay, a world-leading group in superconducting qubits.
