Additional information

This paper presents a comprehensive modelling method for the dynamic behaviour of liquid crystals allowing the accurate study of liquid crystals around small features and of the generation and evolution of defects, essential for the design of high resolution display and non-display devices. This capability forms the base of our collaborations with Ghent, Essex and Cambridge Universities, where we combine our liquid crystal and electromagnetic modelling with their experimental expertise for the design and fabrication of microwave and photonic devices. This work led to invited conference presentations (ILCC’2010, LCP’12), consultancy (MFLEX and Merck) and a PhD studentship funded by Sharp.
