Additional information

Use of liquid crystals allows the fabrication of tuneable/reconfigurable low-cost devices. This paper presents a broadband method combining modelling and experiments to evaluate the LC material parameters allowing the accurate design of devices. While previous work approximate the LC permittivity, this paper shows a design technique that combines electromagnetic and liquid crystal modelling for accurate designs. Tuneable phase shifters and filters have been demonstrated with our collaborators at Essex University. This work led to invited papers (ILCC’2010, LCP’2012), another EPSRC-funded grant (EP/I003894/1: £326,847, PI: Fernandez) and a collaboration with the University of Madrid.
