Additional information

In the pursuit of increasing the data capacity of optical communication systems higher level modulation formats are needed. While polarization-division-multiplexed 16QAM is now the modulation format of choice for 400GbE systems, this paper (GoogleScholar citations >80, downloaded 1000+ times) anticipated this: being the first to study the feasibility of blind equalization and carrier recovery for polarization-division-multiplexed 16QAM. The proposed algorithms are now widely exploited by the technical community for numerous 100GbE to 400GbE system experiments, with this paper leading to numerous invited conference papers, such as the IEEE Summer Topical Meeting (2010) and Signal Processing in Photonic Communications (2010).
