Double-weighted statement

There are few secondary sources concerning Connolly and no previous biographies. Therefore, the book relied largely on extensive periods of research and analysis of the primary source material, which was difficult to locate and scattered haphazardly in archives throughout Ireland and Britain. Maguire also carried out research in the Comintern archives, which are held in Moscow. Connolly was politically active for 65 years. The extensive research and analysis of this activism was necessary to advance an innovative and challenging thesis: that the Left of which he was part was a significant social and political force in twentieth century Ireland.
