Direct fermentation of fodder maize, chicory fructans and perennial ryegrass to hydrogen using mixed microflora
The first report and quantified yield of hydrogen production from fructo-oligosaccharides (the 2nd most globally important plant storage carbohydrate after starch) with or without pre-treatment, either solely or part of the substrate matrix (fodder grass) for the production of energy gases and as an insight into understanding the hydrolysis stage for biogas production. Will result in an improved range of feedstocks and understanding of anaerobic processes for the production of hydrogen and methane energy gases from non-food grade biomass material and will have a significant impact in optimising anaerobic technology. EPSRC SUPERGEN funded (GR/526965/01) and collaboration with Donisson (U. Aberystwyth).
