Additional information

A real-time extension of this work on object recognition using shape was presented by Shotton/Johnson/Cipolla at the Proc IEEE Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition conference in 2008 and awarded the best demonstration prize. That algorithm was later exploited by Shotton and Microsoft (the sponsors of the PhD student) in the Kinect motion controller for the XBox (2010) - the algorithm to estimate detection human body parts from data from the 3D Primesense sensor. Shotton is now a Senior Research Scientist at Microsoft and was awarded RAE MacRobert Award for the extension.
