This book of around 350 pages is the outcome of several years of original research and writing. It breaks new ground by developing an original cultural sociology of the political sphere, arguing that the struggle for power in democratic societies is about much more than money and demography. Focusing on the 2008 presidential campaign in the US, Alexander shows that symbols, narratives and performances are central features of the struggle for power. This book is based on analysis of extensive media coverage, participant observation at Camp Obama and interviews with leading political journalists in Washington and elsewhere.
