Additional information

In this paper we provide the first demonstration that human platelets express the TRPV1 ion channel. Subsequent work, performed in an international collaboration between the University of Extremadura and the University of Cambridge, demonstrated that this channel cannot be found in murine platelets (Sage et al., (2013) Platelets In Press. doi:10.3109/09537104.2013.777952), precluding the use of TRPV1-/- knockout mice to study the in vivo role of this channel. This has prompted use to explore other ways of examining this channel in physiologically-relevant contexts – leading to a British Heart Foundation Studentship PG/07/100/23759) to generate a tissue-engineered human blood vessel model.
