Additional information

This paper shows for the first time that local mechanical strains inside a porous scaffold as used for tissue engineering purposes can be calculated using a finite element model, whose geometry is constructed from micro-CT scans of the scaffold. The method was used in a further study, which showed for the first time that the formation of bone mineral inside a tissue engineering scaffold is directly guided by the magnitude of local mechanical strains (Baas, Kuiper et al., Journal of Biomechanics 43(2010):733-9). It is also used by others in further collaborative work (e.g. j.rouwkema@utwente.nl).
