Imaging of charge spatial density on insulating materials
Described in this paper is the first non-contact static charge imaging measurements using electric potential sensors, leading to a patent (October 2012, No.1219488.2) and a new TSB project with Meggitt and Plessey on novel sensing for gas turbines (start Jan 2013, value £1.1M). It has the potential to increase engine efficiency, where a 0.2mm gap reduction (fan to casing) could reduce annual fuel consumption by 120,000 tonnes, with commensurate benefits on environmental impact.
