The work of this paper is part of the EPSRC funded project (GR/S13316/01) has rated as “Outstanding”. The research developed methodologies based on ridglet transforms to extract topographical features form surface data. The work can be applied to surface topography data or any transient signals for extraction of specific events. This work has also been applied in forensic science, especially for ballistic analysis, which helps analysis the important information left on the bullet surface from the crime scene it has formed part of the patent No 09772841.4; Surface Analysis System.
