Additional information

This paper proposes a novel fitting method based on the alpha shape and enables arbitrary large ball radii fitting, it applies to freeform and non-uniformly sampled surfaces. The theoretical link between the alpha hull and the morphological operations are presented. This output sponsored by the ERC AdG 117228-Surfund was featured by the Institute of Physics 2012. An outstanding PhD was trained with the best student awarded by Chinese Embassy, 2012). The method has been extended to freeform approximation, a paper created from this work was awarded the best paper in the 2011 international conference of Metrology of Engineering Surfaces.
