Additional information

This paper describes the capabilities, benefits, limitations and assumptions of a new engineering modelling tool for the prediction of rolling stock wheelset maintenance. A real industry case study is presented to demonstrate how the model can be used to optimise a fleet's maintenance strategy and determine whole-system costs (vehicle and track). The work was part of the Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) managed rail industry research programme, funded by the Department for Transport, and was supported by the GB Vehicle/Track System Interface Committee.
