Significance of output:

This is fundamental research that influenced the change in F1 motor racing regulations in 2010 season and has helped change the aspect of design of the rear foil. Previous to this season the air flowing from the rear wing of the lead car changed the aerodynamics of the following car. This meant that the conditions of design of F1 cars, i.e. assuming ‘clean’ air was not valid and as a consequence meant the following car had little chance of overtaking. By changing the rear wing characteristics overtaking has become more prevalent and a better race spectacle.
