Additional information
Grouts usually used for encapsulation of nuclear waste are based on higher Portland cement replacement levels by Blast Furnace Slag (BFS) than what is usually used for structural concrete. As a result, published data on long term durability for such systems is very limited. This paper and its related article by the authors (Materials and Structures 45(5): May 2012) have exposed the vulnerability of these grouts to excessive carbonation and coarse microstructure, raising doubt about their suitability for encapsulation. The work was funded by British Nuclear Fuels Limited.
