Significance of output:

A novel approach for constraint-handling in iterative learning control (ILC) is proposed. ILC with constraints is an important but difficult problem due to the lack of design tools and this paper presented the first systematic design-approach for this challenging problem. The approach described has the advantage of greater computational simplicity compared with the only alternative technique (Tomizuka, UC Berkeley). The work led to a best paper award (2012 UKACC conference), is being successfully applied to a gantry robot industrial test-bed and to stroke rehabilitation (EPSRC project EP/I01909X/1, £464,231) and has been adopted elsewhere (e.g. Taiwan, Leuven).
