Significance of output:

Experimentally demonstrates the harnessing of chalcogenide glass phase-change functionality - the foundation of long-established optical (CD/DVD/Blu-ray) and emerging electronic data storage technologies - to deliver unprecedented electro-optic switching functionality: 4-to-1 transmission contrast in metamaterial devices only 1/3 of a wavelength thick. Generated several invited and post-deadline conference papers (Frontiers in Optics 2009, SPIE Optics & Photonics 2009, Photonics North 2010), underpins funding from Samsung's Advanced Institute of Technology (http://www.sait.samsung.co.kr: $100k in 2010-11; $126k for 2012-13. UK contact: jim.oreilly@samsung.com) to advance a “disruptive technology" seed for future business, and draws interest from world leaders in plasmonics (e.g. CALTECH doi:10.1021/nl102684x; EPFL doi:10.1021/nn203173r).
