Significance of output:

We describe a route to depositing low loss hydrogenated-amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) inside optical fibres; an emerging material exhibiting immense potential in silicon photonics due to its large nonlinear properties of use for signal processing applications. The excellent quality of the a-Si:H material has enabled the first demonstrations of high speed (sub-picosecond) all-optical modulation (http://dx.doi.org/10.1364/OE.19.019078) and switching (http://dx.doi.org/10.1364/OE.20.026110). This materials breakthrough has cumulated in five invited talks at major OSA conferences across the USA and Asia, including the OSA Optics and Photonics Congress, Photonics North, and Photonics Global. It was a cornerstone result for EPSRC grants EP/G051755/1 and EP/I035307/1 (2010-2014, ~£1M).
