Significance of output:

The world's first demonstration of silicon on insulator (SOI) waveguides in the 3-4µm mid-infrared wavelength region. A unique experimental setup was built and used for the characterization of photonic structures in the mid-infrared. The joint work with NUS Singapore (funded by the Royal Society MIR Si photonics grant, 2008-2013, £480k) demonstrates that SOI can be used for wavelengths up to 4µm (with record low loss to date) thus enabling realisation of compact and low cost Si photonic circuits for sensing, defense and security, and medicine. It resulted in 5 invited talks at major photonics conferences.
